Project Oversight, Work Zone Safety and International Marketing of Software Were Among the AASHTO Initiatives in 2003 in Engineering and Technical Services

Abstract:

AASHTO placed a greater focus on project management and cost estimating issues in 2003. AASHTO’s Task Force on Project Oversight worked cooperatively with FHWA in developing draft recommendations for managing “mega” transportation projects, including information on: project cost control and cost estimating; fraud detection and prevention; quality control; financial management; human resources development; and public trust and confidence. AASHTO also created a Joint Task Force on Cost Estimating (under the Subcommittee on Design) to be a focal point for cost estimating issues within the State DOTs.
In 2003, the Cooperative Computer Software Development Program was selected as a semi-finalist. for the Innovations in American Government Award of the Harvard University Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation. This award seeks to promote and replicate creative and effective ideas into government best practices across the nation. Ten finalists are to be selected in early 2004, and 3 winners will be announced later in the spring.
