Research Pays Off: Automated Speed Enforcement Slows Down Drivers in Work Zones

Author/Presenter: Tobias, Priscilla
Abstract:

In 2004 the Illinois Department of Transportation (DOT) deployed two self-contained vans to implement a speed-radar photo enforcement (SPE) program in work zones with the intention of reducing fatalities. The vans are staffed by Illinois State Police officers, and equipped with down-the-road radar and across-the-road radar systems. Vehicles travelling over a speed limit are photographed and ticketed. The use of SPE vans in conjunction with the state’s other educational programs have been effective in reducing speed and work zone fatalities. Illinois DOT has expanded the SPE program to five SPE vans. Maryland, Oregon, and Washington adopted the same practice.
