Safe at Night?
Abstract:A decade ago, when nighttime construction on highways in places like New York and New Jersey was routine, nobody was doing it in Maine. It wasn’t necessary. Now, with two construction projects on two of the state’s busiest stretches of highway and a fatal crash in a work zone on the Maine Turnpike last week, the transportation community is being asked again – is it safe’ The short answer, they say, is yes. What matters is not daylight or darkness, but rather how many cars are on the road. Fewer cars mean fewer accidents. They also say more state police in work areas would help make them safer.
