Smart Arrow Boards Could Announce Short-Term Lane Closures on Minnesota Roads

Author/Presenter: Harlow, Tim
Abstract:

Tools such as the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT)’s 511 traveler information service works well for communicating lane closures associated with long-term projects that would take more than a full day, but not for the short-term projects such as painting operations, sign replacement and guardrail repairs that may take only one hour. Street Smart Rental has developed a Smart Arrow Board that has a black box attached to an arrow board transmitting real-time lane closure information to MnDOT’s 511 system. Minnesota was the first state to pilot the Smart Arrow Board widely.
