Street Smarts: Waymo and Waze Turn Driver Data Into Pothole Repairs

Abstract:

Waymo and Waze have launched a pilot program that uses data collected by Waymo’s autonomous vehicles to identify potholes and share the information with local transportation agencies through the Waze for Cities platform. Initially operating in Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area, the initiative aims to improve roadway maintenance by supplementing traditional public reports and manual inspections with automated, sensor-based detection. Waze users will also benefit from more accurate pothole information, helping cities respond more efficiently and improve road safety.
