Temporary Traffic Control Technologies for One-Lane, Two-Way Operations

Abstract:

As part of the FHWA-sponsored ATSSA Work Zone Safety Grant, this publication showcases temporary traffic control technologies designed to enhance safety and efficiency for one-lane, two-way operations on two-lane roadways. Highlighted during a live demonstration at the 2025 ATSSA Annual Convention and Traffic Expo, the featured devices included Automated Flagger Assistance Devices (AFADs), Portable Traffic Signals (PTSs), and Residential Driveway Temporary Signals (RDTSs). Five vendors presented multiple configurations of these technologies to an audience of public and private sector professionals. The report details device characteristics, field applications, and case studies from Michigan, South Dakota, and North Carolina, illustrating how these innovations address traffic management challenges, improve worker safety, and support flexible deployment across various project durations and roadway conditions.
