Walter Workzone Speaks up About Lane Closures on City Streets

Abstract:

Walter Workzone discusses components of traffic control for temporary lane closure. These include the advance warning area, the transition area and the buffer space. The article includes drawings of traffic control layouts from the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD). A chart for determining the length (in feet and meters) of longitudinal buffer space based on speed is provided. The article also provides a formula and chart for determining minimum taper lengths and suggested maximum spacing of traffic control devices (in feet). The TEEX Work Zone Traffic Control Training Course is also discussed, and a listing of locations and dates is given in a side bar.
