Winter Is Here, and Falling Ice Closures Are Possible for the Mackinac Bridge

Abstract:

Ice accumulation on the towers and cables of the Mackinac Bridge has raised the possibility of temporary traffic closures due to falling ice hazards. Large chunks, sheets, and spear-like formations of ice can fall hundreds of feet from the bridge, posing risks to vehicles and occupants. The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) may close the bridge when falling ice threatens safety, and officials advise travelers to stay informed through alerts, websites, and social media updates. Historical records show that since 1995 the bridge has been closed 32 times due to falling ice, with closures averaging nearly six hours but accounting for less than 0.1 percent of total operating time.
