Work Zone Safety – New Solutions for Serious Problems
Abstract:Strategic Highway Research Program projects have resulted in innovative products to address two work zone safety situations that have long been serious problems. The first involves a disproportionate number of accidents occuring during slow-moving winter maintenance activities, and the second involves accidents in work zones just past areas with steep side slopes that limit ability to place effective warning signs. The first problem is addressed by the use of the Salt Spreader Truck- Mounted Attenuator (TMA), and the second by the Portable (or Montana) Sign and Stand. This brochure briefly describes how TMAs work, and how they improve safety and reduce costs. It also describes how the Montana sign base works on steep slopes.
