Work Zone Speeding

Abstract:

Police officers delivered 88 speeding tickets in less than 4 hours along a stretch of Florida insterstate highway dressed as Work Zone crews as they initiated “Operation Hard Hat.” The operation was organized in an attempt to get the attention of drivers who speed in work zones – a practice resposible for 134 deaths and 12,000 injuries in the state of Florida since 1997. Troopers in work zone gear clocked the passing speeders in the zones, then radioed ahead to motorcycle patrol officers who stopped and ticketed the speeders, with double fines and assessment of up to four points against drivers’ licenses.
