Working Near Traffic – Work Zone End of Queue Study: Literature Review

Author/Presenter: Debnath, Ashim; Siriwardene, Sajani; Blackman, Ross; Afroza, Sadia; Ghimire, Amrit; Nguyen, Nhu; Ashraf, Mahmud; Ranawaka, Tharindu
Abstract:

To properly understand work zone End of Queue (EOQ) crashes, the associated issues, and potential treatments, a comprehensive review of literature and background materials was undertaken. This review commences by introducing the roadway work zone context, defining EOQ crashes, and summarising the most common hazards and safety issues. Thereafter, the review provides a comprehensive description and assessment of the literature regarding factors contributing to EOQ crashes and outcomes, the controls and mitigation strategies identified and, where possible, their effectiveness. To supplement and strengthen this review, the findings of the expert consultations are incorporated into the current section at relevant points. This provides an empirical foundation for future trial and evaluation of appropriate safety measures and technologies designed to reduce the frequency and/or severity of EOQ crashes.
