WYDOT Awarded Federal Grant for Smarter Work Zones
Abstract:The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) a $1.5 million Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation grant. This competitive discretionary grant aims to enhance work zones through connected vehicle programs. By leveraging the Situation Data Exchange (SDX), WYDOT will directly communicate with drivers about work zone hazards, including reduced speed limits, width restrictions, delays, and worker presence. Notably, this grant does not require a matching amount from the state, and it covers both program development and implementation. WYDOT’s commitment to innovation has led to its first SMART grant and a total of $65.5 million in additional federal funding for Wyoming’s infrastructure. The SDX system, developed in collaboration with Laramie engineering firm Trihydro Corporation, promises safer and more efficient work zones.
