Work Zone Road Safety Audits: What to Look for

Planning/Design Phase*

  • Review alternate road networks and possible detour routes
  • Coordinate with planned adjacent projects
  • Verify geometric design and stopping sight distances

  • Ensure safety and mobility goals are met
  • Identify local impacts and mitigation techniques
  • Mitigate for expected crash

Active Work Zone*

A stop sign that has been pushed over. Ensure TTC devices are visible and functional
A concrete barrier. Check for appropriate positive protection
Directional signs on an overhead gantry Identify confusing signing
A truck-mounted attenuator in the buffer area of a closed lane in a work zone. Look for unexpected queuing and compromised sight distances
Channelizing devices, signs, and other devices in a group. Look for visual clutter
A broken channelizing device. Check for broken equipment
Emergency turn out sign. Accommodate heavy vehicles, EMS, and law enforcement
