Requirement for using channelizing devices (e.g. cones) to separate traffic from the work area for a work operation
In Virginia, 36-inch cones are required in this type of operation to close off and delineate the lane being worked on for roadways greater than 20 feet wide, regardless of whether a pilot vehicle is used. For roadways 20 feet or less in width, cones are required to be used only in the taper closing off the lane under repairs. This approach allows motorists more room to travel around the operation, which improves traffic flow.
