Requirements for work or shadow vehicles to have Truck-Mounted Attenuator (TMA)

Virginia requires the use of a shadow vehicle when installing and removing lane closure traffic control. When the posted speed limit is 45 mph or greater on roadways with four or more travel lanes, the shadow vehicle shall be equipped with a Truck-Mounted Attenuator (TMA).
Virginia does not require TMAs on work vehicles, but does require them on the shadow vehicle(s) protecting the work vehicle for the situations above, and for all mobile operations.
