ALDOT to Use Message Signs More After Recent Traffic Slowdown

Author/Presenter: Goodin, GraciAnn
Abstract:

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is nearing completion of its $5.2 million advanced corridor management project along Interstate 565 in Huntsville, marked by the installation of a new dynamic message sign (DMS) near the Triana Boulevard overpass. The project, which began in summer 2023, also includes two additional DMS units, 10 traffic cameras, and two road and weather monitoring stations. Designed to enhance ALDOT’s intelligent transportation system, the signs provide real-time updates on travel conditions, road work, detours, and safety messages. ALDOT spokesman Seth Burkett acknowledged missed opportunities to use the system during a recent bridge inspection that caused major delays but emphasized lessons learned for future events. State Sen. Arthur Orr, a strong advocate for expanding DMS use in north Alabama, urged ALDOT to ensure the signs are fully functional and actively used to inform motorists. Despite earlier utility and power supply challenges, ALDOT reports the system is now operating at full capacity, with additional DMS installations planned for Interstate 65.
