Annual AGC Survey Details Work Zone Safety Issues
Abstract:An annual highway work zone safety survey by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and HCSS found that 60% of 600 surveyed highway contractors experienced at least one vehicle-related crash in work zones over the past year, with nearly one-third reporting five or more. While 13% of contractors reported worker fatalities, work zone crashes were nearly twice as likely to result in driver or passenger deaths. The findings highlight increasing concerns about work zone safety, with 47% of contractors saying conditions are more dangerous than a year ago. Respondents called for stricter laws, better enforcement, and wider use of technology to alert drivers in real time. AGC emphasized the importance of public awareness, legislative support, and technological innovation in reducing injuries and fatalities in highway work zones.
