Augmented Reality Could Make Work Zones Safer—If the Tech Works for the Workers
Abstract:This article explores the potential of augmented reality (AR) technology to enhance roadway worker safety, focusing on a study led by University of Minnesota researcher Nichole Morris. The study evaluated the usability of an AR safety system designed to warn workers of potential hazards. Indoor and outdoor tests involving Minnesota Department of Transportation and maintenance workers yielded positive feedback on the system’s usability, mental effort, and trust. The research, conducted in collaboration with UNC Charlotte, highlights the critical role of trust in user experience. Findings were published in the International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics and supported by a National Science Foundation grant.
