Biden Administration Announces New Rule to Protect Workers From Heat-Related Illnesses

Author/Presenter: Chien, Lia
Abstract:

The Biden administration proposed a new rule to protect workers from heat-related illnesses as climate change leads to rising temperatures. The rule mandates employers to monitor heat exposure, provide cool-down areas, and enforce breaks for workers in high-temperature environments. It covers 35 million workers in industries like construction, agriculture, and indoor settings with heat exposure. The initiative includes acclimatization protocols for new workers and coincides with $1 billion in FEMA funding to bolster infrastructure against extreme weather events. The plan aims to reduce heat-related deaths and injuries.
