Biden Proposes New Rule to Protect 36 Million Workers From Extreme Heat

Author/Presenter: Naishadham, Suman
Abstract:

President Joe Biden has proposed a new federal rule to address excessive workplace heat, aimed at protecting 36 million U.S. workers from heat-related injuries and fatalities. The proposed rule would be the first of its kind at the federal level, requiring employers to mitigate heat hazards by providing rest breaks, water, shade, and training for workers. The announcement comes as millions face heat advisories and highlights Biden’s broader climate agenda, which includes FEMA grants and a forthcoming White House summit on extreme heat. Industry opposition remains strong, but the rule would override state laws, setting a national standard.
