California Implements Speed Cameras in Highway Work Zones to Boost Safety
Abstract:Assembly Bill 289, authored by Matt Haney, has taken effect in California, authorizing the use of automated speed cameras in highway work zones to improve safety for motorists and approximately 80,000 road workers statewide. The law enables fines starting at $50 for drivers exceeding posted limits by 11 to 15 mph, with 75 cameras already installed across the state. The measure responds to significant safety concerns, including 9,000 work zone crashes, 3,000 injuries, and 73 fatalities reported in 2021. Drawing on evidence from other states demonstrating reductions in speeding and crashes, the legislation aims to deter dangerous driving behavior and enhance protection for both construction workers and the traveling public.
