Caltrans Construction Plan to Save Motorists Time, Frustration
Abstract:Two additional transportation projects have been selected for an innovative construction contracting technique to provide a measure of relief for motorists stuck in traffic or plagued by the din of freeway noise. Caltrans Director Jeff Morales said that with design sequencing, the department’s engineers are able to enter into a construction contract with as little as 30 percent of the design work completed. Improvements can begin on the initial stages of the project while the subsequent phases are designed. “By using this method, we can combine individual contracts at each location and complete the work faster because design and construction are progressing on parallel tracks,” said Morales. Design sequencing will cut one year off the time needed to build the Sacramento project and more than 6 months on the I-680 job.
