CDOT Is Piloting Autonomous Truck-Mounted Attenuators to Enhance Safety for Road Crews
Author/Presenter: Kawamoto, KyleAbstract:
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is piloting autonomous truck-mounted attenuators (ATMAs) to improve work zone safety for road crews. These self-driving crash cushion trucks follow work vehicles and protect personnel from vehicles that may enter the work zone, reducing the risk of collisions. Recent tests in Southern Colorado demonstrate their effectiveness in shielding crews during routine tasks, while federal and state funding supports program expansion. CDOT emphasizes that while the technology cannot prevent every incident, it represents a significant advance in safeguarding maintenance workers, allowing them to complete their work with reduced exposure to roadside hazards.
