Ceremonial Bill Signing Celebrates SC Construction Work Zone Driver’s License Training Law

Abstract:

Carolinas AGC (CAGC) celebrated the signing of the Operation Work Zone Awareness legislation by Governor Henry McMaster, a significant milestone in enhancing construction zone safety. This new law, championed by Sen. Ross Turner and Rep. Gary Brewer, mandates that South Carolina’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) implement a construction work zone safety training program. It requires all new drivers to complete a one-hour safety training course, integrated into their existing eight-hour driver education. This positions South Carolina as only the third state to modernize driver training to include work zone awareness. The training video, developed in collaboration with SCDMV and local driving schools, covers essential safety protocols, signage, and real-life testimonies. Leslie Clark, COO of CAGC, emphasized the importance of this legislation in safeguarding both construction workers and the public. Eric Yates, Chair of the CAGC Work Zone Task Force Subcommittee, expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort to advance work zone safety.
