DOT Pilots Automated Flagging Technology for Work Zones Around the State
Author/Presenter: Gaiss, KevinAbstract:
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has introduced automated flagging devices to enhance safety in roadway work zones by removing flaggers from direct traffic exposure. Traditionally, flaggers play a critical role in managing vehicle flow and protecting workers, but they face high risks from distracted drivers. The new technology allows flaggers to control traffic remotely using a tablet, maintaining their responsibilities while operating from a safer location. Training standards remain unchanged, ensuring certified operators can adapt to the devices’ mechanics. With initial deployment across the state’s four districts, CTDOT expects wider adoption as part of its ongoing commitment to safer, more efficient work zones.
