Fact Sheet: OSHA’s Proposed Heat Safety Standards
Abstract:The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed a new rule on August 30, 2024, to establish comprehensive heat safety standards for workers in both indoor and outdoor environments. This proposed rule includes guidelines for heat exposure thresholds, ensuring accessible drinking water, developing a Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Plan, designating heat-safety coordinators, providing shaded or air-conditioned break areas, and implementing acclimatization plans for new or returning employees. Additional high-heat protocols require mandatory breaks, hazard notifications, and a buddy or observation system for monitoring. Employers are also tasked with delivering heat-specific training, adopting engineering and administrative controls, maintaining relevant personal protective equipment, and ensuring emergency response measures. Public comments on the proposal are due by December 30, 2024.
