Flaggers Won’t Give up New Safety Device

In an effort to promote safer conditions in work zones, the Kentucky Transportation Center, in conjunction with the State of Kentucky and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), operated a project to demonstrate the use of the flashing stop/slow paddle at maintenance work zones across the State. Developed by the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), the flashing stop/slow paddle is much like the stop/slow paddles traditionally used by flaggers at work zones, but features a high-intensity flashing light that the flagger can activate to attract a driver’s attention.
