Flaggers Won’t Give up New Safety Device
Abstract:In an effort to promote safer conditions in work zones, the Kentucky Transportation Center, in conjunction with the State of Kentucky and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), operated a project to demonstrate the use of the flashing stop/slow paddle at maintenance work zones across the State. Developed by the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), the flashing stop/slow paddle is much like the stop/slow paddles traditionally used by flaggers at work zones, but features a high-intensity flashing light that the flagger can activate to attract a driver’s attention.
