Guidance for the Use of Temporary Pavement Markings in Work Zones

Abstract:

This guide provides guidelines on the application of temporary markings in highway work zones. It summarizes information from various sources when considering placement and removal of temporary pavement marking. The guide is designed for use by traffic control supervisors and other contractor field staff and provides easy access to information from multiple sources. It will also be helpful for highway agency staff in evaluating temporary pavement markings.

  • What are the typical temporary pavement markings in work zones?   What level of quality of marking guides drivers and improves the overall safety of the work zone?
  • What marking removals are cost-effective for removal without scarring of the pavement?

Construction and maintenance

Target Audience:
Traffic control supervisors and other contractor field staff. It is also intended for use by highway agency staff to develop procedures and standards for management of temporary pavement marking.
