High-Tech Snowplows and AI Help Cities Clean up From Big Storms
Author/Presenter: McMurray, JeffAbstract:
The article examines how U.S. cities, led by Syracuse, New York, are modernizing snow removal operations through the use of GPS tracking, video monitoring, and artificial intelligence. These technologies enable real-time tracking of snowplows, improve operational efficiency, and enhance transparency with the public, contributing to a notable decline in resident complaints. Other municipalities, including New York City and several smaller cities, are adopting similar or customized systems to optimize routing, reduce costs, and improve safety. The integration of data-driven tools has also helped lower material usage and insurance claims while supporting more equitable and responsive snow-clearing efforts, highlighting a broader shift toward technology-driven urban infrastructure management.
