INDOT Announces Expansion of Worksite Speed Control Pilot
Abstract:The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced the expansion of its automated work zone speed enforcement pilot, known as Safe Zones, to Interstate 65 in Lake County, beginning on or soon after July 7, 2025. This follows a successful trial in the Clear Path I-465/I-69 zone near Indianapolis, where over 25,000 first-violation warnings were issued in the first month. Under the program, vehicles exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph or more will be captured by truck-mounted speed timing devices, and drivers will receive mailed violation notices: a warning for the first offense, followed by $75 and $150 civil fines for second and subsequent violations, respectively. Violations are only valid when workers are present. Authorized by the 2023 Indiana General Assembly, the five-year pilot may be active at up to four work sites at a time.
