INDOT Shifts Speed Cameras to New Site as ‘Pre-Enforcement Period’ Continues
Author/Presenter: Smith, BrandonAbstract:
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is relocating its speed cameras to a new highway construction site at the Interstates 465 and 69 interchange in northeast Indianapolis as part of its ongoing pilot program. Initially launched on Interstate 70 in August 2024, the program aims to improve safety by reducing speeding in work zones. During a 30-day pre-enforcement period at the new site, speeding drivers will receive warnings rather than fines. The cameras target vehicles exceeding the speed limit by at least 11 mph, and early results from the first site showed a 6 mph reduction in average speeds. Once fully tested, INDOT plans to expand the program to four sites statewide, with fines escalating after the first warning.
