INDOT Worksite Speed Control Pilot Program Adding New Sites
Abstract:The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is expanding its Safe Zones worksite speed control pilot program, which uses automated speed enforcement to improve safety in highway construction zones. Currently active on I-465/I-69 in Indianapolis and I-65 near Lowell, the program will resume on I-70 in Hancock County and launch on I-80/90 in Steuben County starting mid-September. According to INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist, pilot sites have seen a 70% reduction in excessive speeding, contributing to safer conditions for both drivers and road workers. The system issues warnings for first-time offenders and fines of $75 and $150 for subsequent violations. Enforcement is only valid when workers are present, and fines support the state’s General Fund. INDOT officials emphasized the continued need for drivers to slow down and remain alert in work zones to ensure safety for all.
