Iowa DOT Official Testifies on Work Zone Safety
Abstract:Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) research director Ian MacGillivray testified before a congressional hearing in Washington, D.C., concerning work zone safety. Subcommittee hearings on transportation issues are currently being held as Congress prepares to pass legislation to reauthorize the federal highway bill. The Iowa DOT was invited to present a state’s perspective due to its innovative and highly successful work zone safety programs. MacGillivray, director of the DOT’s Research Management Division, shared with the committee what the DOT is doing to enhance safety in work zones, and to offer suggestions for initiatives that could lead to improved safety for motorists and workers in highway work zones. MacGillivray’s comments to the committee included a request for more flexible funding so that additional federal funds would be available to support research and education.
