ISP to Send ‘Move Over’ Alerts in Waze, Google Maps

Author/Presenter: Ruch, Amber
Abstract:

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois State Police (ISP) announced a new GPS-based notification system to reduce “Move Over” crashes. Developed in partnership with Google Public Sector and the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology, the system sends real-time alerts via Waze to urge drivers to slow down and move over when ISP is responding to incidents like crashes, traffic stops, or disabled vehicles. Icons indicating police activity will appear on Waze, with similar updates planned for Google Maps. The initiative supports compliance with Scott’s Law, which mandates drivers slow down and change lanes near stationary emergency or maintenance vehicles. Since 2019, Illinois has reported two trooper fatalities and multiple injuries due to “Move Over” crashes.
