Looking Deep into the Eyes: Green Light on TMAs Could be Another Option for DOTs

Author/Presenter: Zhang, Siyang; Qing, Zhu; Brown, Henry; Sun, Carlos; Edara, Praveen
Abstract:

Truck-mounted attenuator (TMA) has been used as a countermeasure to help improve safety in mobile work zones. However, 139 TMA crashes occurred in Missouri from 2012 to 2017 with distracted driving being cited as one of the main reasons. To reduce the number of TMA crashes, MoDOT explored the use of green lights on TMAs as a possible countermeasure. This article provides a summary of the MoDOT project that assessed the effectiveness of green lights on TMAs and discusses the efforts taken.
