Maine DOT Deploying New Work Zone Safety System

Abstract:

The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) is implementing a new “Smart Work Zone System” to enhance safety and awareness during the 2024 construction season. This system uses portable sensors placed miles ahead of interstate work zones to monitor vehicle speeds and traffic volumes, providing real-time updates to digital message boards for motorists. This technology is particularly critical for warning drivers of speed reductions or stopped traffic on high-speed interstates. It enables daytime construction on I-295 between Topsham and Gardiner, improving safety and reducing taxpayer costs. MaineDOT highlights the importance of the “Move Over Law” and cautions drivers to stay alert in work zones to prevent accidents and protect construction workers. The system’s introduction comes as Maine sees over 500 work zone crashes annually, with leading causes being close following, distraction, and failure to yield.
