Maintaining Roads and Keeping Workers Safe Is a Constant Effort

Author/Presenter: Vaquera, Cynthia
Abstract:

Maintaining safe and reliable roadways requires more than materials and machinery—it depends on planning, preparedness, and strong leadership. This article highlights the work of Kevin Lenox, a TxDOT maintenance supervisor in Burnet, whose daily responsibilities range from routine maintenance to responding to crashes and unexpected emergencies. Drawing on his experience as a Marine, Lenox emphasizes data-driven planning, continuous training, and calm decision-making under pressure to protect his team. Through firsthand accounts of on-the-job hazards, the article underscores the importance of safety culture, teamwork, and public awareness. In recognition of Crash Responder Safety Week, it also reminds drivers of their role in slowing down or moving over to help ensure that roadside workers return home safely each day.
