Temporary Traffic Control for Short-Duration, Short-Term Stationary, and Mobile Operations

Abstract:

The August 2025 update to Temporary Traffic Control for Short-Duration, Short-Term Stationary, and Mobile Operations provides comprehensive guidance for safely managing work zones that impact traffic for brief periods. Developed by ATSSA under a FHWA Work Zone Safety Grant, the document outlines practices, checklists, and MUTCD-based recommendations for operations lasting from a few minutes to one daylight period. It addresses a wide range of activities—from debris removal and pavement repairs to utility work and mowing—and emphasizes the importance of tailoring traffic control setups to specific field conditions. The publication includes information on TTC zone components, taper lengths, buffer spaces, and pedestrian accommodations, and features practical examples from agencies for very short-duration tasks. This resource is intended for use by maintenance crews, inspectors, utility workers, and agency staff working near or within highway rights-of-way.
