MnDOT Honors Fallen Transportation Workers for Worker Memorial Day
Abstract:The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) commemorates Worker Memorial Day by honoring transportation workers who have been killed or injured on state highways. Since 1960, 36 MnDOT workers and 16 contractors have lost their lives while working on Minnesota roads. Governor Tim Walz proclaimed April 28, 2024, as Worker Memorial Day, and the Interstate 35W Bridge in Minneapolis was illuminated in orange to honor these workers. Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger emphasized the importance of road safety and urged drivers to slow down, avoid distractions, and follow safety guidelines in work zones to protect both workers and motorists. MnDOT highlighted that the majority of work zone fatalities and injuries affect drivers and passengers, providing specific safety tips for navigating work zones. The public is encouraged to visit MnDOT’s Transportation Worker Memorial website for more information and to honor the fallen workers.
