MnDOT Pauses Work for Statewide Safety Stand Down in Recognition of Two Recent Construction Zone Deaths
Abstract:The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) held its first-ever statewide safety stand down to honor two construction contractors who recently lost their lives in work zones and to reaffirm the agency’s commitment to worker safety. The pause in construction activity created space for staff to reflect, share experiences, and focus on improving safety practices. State leaders emphasized the human impact of work zone crashes and underscored the need for stronger safety protocols, proper training, and greater awareness from both workers and motorists. Industry and labor representatives called for renewed vigilance and a strengthened safety culture to prevent future tragedies. The article also highlights key actions drivers must take to protect work zone crews, including reducing speed, avoiding distractions, and following posted guidance.
