More Than 25,000 Warnings Issued in First Month of Safe Zones Enforcement

Abstract:

Indiana’s Safe Zones worksite speed control pilot program began enforcement on May 5, 2025, in the Clear Path I-465/I-69 construction zone, resulting in over 25,000 first-time speeding warnings. Created through House Enrolled Act 1015, the program uses automated systems to detect vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit by 11 mph or more, issuing warnings or fines depending on repeat offenses. Early data shows a 75% reduction in excessive speeding at the site. The initiative, led by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), aims to improve safety for motorists and road workers by reducing dangerous speeds in work zones. Additional Safe Zones sites will launch later in 2025.
