Motorists Are Almost Twice as Likely to Die in a Work Zone Crash as Construction Workers as Officials Push for Stronger Laws, More Enforcement

Abstract:

A new national study by the Associated General Contractors of America and HCSS reveals that motorists are nearly twice as likely to die in highway work zone crashes as construction workers. Based on a survey of over 600 highway construction firms, the findings show widespread concern about increasing dangers in work zones, with 60% of contractors reporting at least one crash in the past year and 47% stating that work zone risks have grown. The study highlights inadequate enforcement and penalties, distracted driving, and a lack of public awareness as key contributors to the problem. In response, AGC is advocating for stronger safety laws, enhanced enforcement, and improved data collection at both state and federal levels to reduce fatalities and injuries in work zones.
