National Highways Trials AI to Ease Roadwork Problems

Author/Presenter: Tatum, Adrian
Abstract:

National Highways has selected three innovative proposals utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to mitigate traffic disruptions caused by roadworks. These winning ideas, chosen from a pool of shortlisted candidates, aim to revolutionize roadwork planning, enhance understanding of road user behavior, and leverage AI-powered text analytics to improve people’s perceptions of roadworks. Collaborating with industry leaders such as Costain, Balfour Beatty, and Kier, the chosen projects will receive up to £60,000 each for trials on the roads. Spearheaded by companies like Alchera Technologies, Robok, and WordNerds, these trials mark a significant step towards easing the impact of essential roadworks on both road users and nearby communities. Supported by technical and commercial experts, these initiatives hold promise for transforming the road construction sector’s approach to managing disruptions effectively.
