New Law Aims to Improve Safety in Active Construction, School Zones

Kansas’ new Senate Bill 366 prohibits drivers from using handheld mobile phones while operating vehicles in active road construction and school zones. Effective July 1, 2026, the law permits hands-free device use and applies in construction zones when workers are present and warning signs are posted, as well as in school zones when reduced speed limits are in effect. Law enforcement will issue warnings through June 30, 2027; beginning July 1, 2027, violations may result in a $60 fine plus court costs. Senate Bill 366 also allows construction and maintenance vehicles to display green lights in addition to the currently permitted amber and white lights.
