New ‘Zone’ Rule Means Millions of Americans Now Forced to Take Extra Driving License Test After Spike in Deadly Crashes

Author/Presenter: Katib, Maleeha
Abstract:

Connecticut has introduced a mandatory work zone safety course for new drivers in response to a rise in fatal incidents in highway work zones. The free online course, required for all learner’s permit applicants and drivers convicted of work zone violations, aims to improve awareness of hazards such as reduced lanes, lower speed limits, shifting traffic patterns, and the presence of roadside workers. State officials emphasize that the program promotes safe and responsible driving while highlighting the human impact of work zone crashes, including recent fatalities involving transportation workers and law enforcement officers. Supported by the governor, legislature, and transportation agencies, the initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce crashes, protect workers, and save lives on Connecticut roads.
