PennDOT Activates Work Zone Speed Camera Program
Abstract:Pennsylvania recently implemented a Work Zone Speed Safety Camera program aimed at curbing speeding in highway work zones. The program utilizes vehicle-mounted systems to detect motorists exceeding posted speed limits by 11 miles per hour or more, issuing civil penalties without affecting driver’s licenses. Building upon a successful five-year pilot program, which saw significant reductions in speeding and work zone crashes, the initiative became permanent with legislative support. Officials emphasize the program’s role in safeguarding both workers and motorists, highlighting its potential to change unsafe driving behaviors. This article explores Pennsylvania’s efforts to improve work zone safety through automated speed enforcement and discusses similar initiatives in other states like Arkansas and New York.
