Piloting Smart Work Zone Technologies to Provide Real-Time Lane Closure Information to Improve Oregon Highway Safety and Mobility
Author/Presenter: Wang, Haizhong; Li, Xiugang; Louis, Joseph; Staes, Brian M.Abstract:
This study presents the results and implementation strategies on the deployment of smart
work zone equipment. A smart arrow board in combination with location beacons were tested towards
understanding best practices, both informed by the test pilot and through a literature review, on the
inclusion of such devices within work zones in Oregon. Furthermore, the deployment of these devices
in an active work zone was also used as a case study on how these devices might be integrated into
three primary categories: TripCheck, automation of the over-dimension permitting system from Oregon
Department of Transportation’s Commerce and Compliance Division, and the establishment of
ODOT’s work zone data exchange feed.
