Quebec Needs to Do More to Protect Traffic Signallers on Work Sites, Union Says
Abstract:Following a recent hit-and-run incident in Montreal resulting in the death of a traffic signaller and injury to another, the union representing traffic controllers in Quebec is demanding enhanced safety measures to protect workers. The incident, which marks the province’s 19th traffic controller fatality in three decades, has sparked calls for immediate action. Martin L’Abbée of United Steelworkers emphasizes the critical role of traffic controllers in ensuring road safety and proposes updates to Quebec’s driving courses, increased safety training for construction companies, and stricter penalties for drivers violating traffic signals near construction sites. While the Quebec Transport Minister’s office acknowledges the need for improvements and announces plans for additional safety measures, including enhanced signage installation and increased speed monitoring, L’Abbée insists that more comprehensive actions are necessary. This article highlights the urgent need to prioritize the safety of traffic control workers and emphasizes the crucial role they play in safeguarding road users.
