Slow Down and Move Over for Stopped Emergency Vehicles

Abstract:

The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program, in collaboration with state and local law enforcement, launched a statewide enforcement campaign from May 12–18 to promote awareness and compliance with the state’s Move Over Law. This law requires drivers to either change lanes or slow down when approaching emergency or utility vehicles stopped roadside with flashing lights. The campaign aims to enhance roadside safety for law enforcement officers, emergency responders, and NCDOT workers. Officials emphasized the legal and safety consequences of noncompliance, including fines and potential criminal charges.
