Solutions to the Traffic Snarl

Author/Presenter: Taylor, Rich
Abstract:

Recurring and nonrecurring traffic conditions can cause traffic congestion and hinder the flow of traffic, but recent technological and operational improvements are available to reduce traffic delay. This article describes ways to increase highway capacity and provides examples of projects that have utilized new operational and technological improvements. In order for improvement, operational and technological solutions must emphasize the efficiency of the following four areas: Real-time traveler information, traffic incident management, work zone mobility, and traffic signal timing.
